Gauge
12 sts & 16 rows = 4” (10 cm) in sc
Gauge is not really that crucial for this project. Just try experimenting with different hook sizes & different weight yarns to get a gauge you are happy with for the project you are working on.
If your Cat Worry Worm looks narrow or not as full as you anticipated, try a heavier weight yarn. If you want your Cat Worry Worm to be longer, just increase the number of stitches in your body chain.
Size
This Black Cat Worry Worm measures about 4.7 “ (12 cm) in height.
Yardage
Weight: 5 gm
Approximately 7.4 yards (6.8 meters)
Notes
- You can use any type of yarn as long as you have a corresponding crochet hook size (check yarn label for recommendations). Best results are with bulkier weight yarns.
- You can make the pattern larger or smaller by changing the type of yarn and/or hook size.
- Numbers at the end of each row (in brackets) indicate the number of final stitches in that row.
- Beginning ch 2 counts as a stitch.
- Worry Worms turn out best with heavier weight yarns.
- Please note that I use US crochet terms.

Black Cat Worry Worm Pattern Instructions
Head (part 1)
- Start your worry worm’s head with a Magic Circle (MC), ch 2 (counts as first hdc).
- Round 1: 11 hdc into MC (12).
Body
- Row 1: ch 21 (This is the center of your cat’s body) (21).
- Row 2: 4 sc into the second ch from your hook.
- 4 sc into each st across towards the cat’s head (80).
- Sl st into the same st you started from to join body to head.
- Curl your cat’s body by twisting it into shape (you could use your finger or a pencil and twist around it).
Head (part 2)
Round 2: Sc into the next 3 sts, 2 sc into the next st, ch 2, sl st into the first ch (picot), sl st into the next 2 sts, ch 2, sl st into the first ch (picot), sl st into the next st, 2 sc into the next st, sc into the next 3 stitches.
- Sl st into the last st (from where you started your body chain).
- Leaving a 4” tail, cut your yarn and pull it through your last st to fo.
- Pull your beginning yarn tail to ensure the hole in your cat’s head is closed tightly.
- Tie the beginning tail to the end tail and secure with a double knot. Cut excess.
Embellishments
You have several options for embellishing your Black Cat Worry Worm. Here’s what you can do:
Eyes
Option 1:
- Googly eyes (round white) - simply stick on some googly eyes with the adhesive they come with or use a glue gun to attach.
Option 2:
- Doll Glass Eye Beads - these are glass eye beads that also come with adhesive sticker for easy attachment.
Option 3:
- Felt eyes - cut out the shape of cat eyes in white or green & add a thick stripe down the center of the eye from top to bottom with a marker for the pupil.
Whiskers (optional)
White Yarn or Twine
- Cute a length of about 4” of white yarn or twine.
- Insert this strand of yarn into your darning needle and make a tiny stitch just under the Magic Circle (back to front, skip a stitch, then front to back). Now bring both strands to the front of the face by pulling each strand out from the other’s stitch. (You could also use your crochet hook to pull the strand through). Cut excess that protrudes out beyond the face. Frizzle the whiskers by spreading the strands apart.
Scarf
- With orange yarn, tie a slip knot on your hook.
- Ch 25 (25).
- Leaving a 4” tail, cut your yarn & fo.
- Tie the cat’s scarf around its neck and fasten with a simple knot.
- Cut off excess on both ends leaving about 1”.
Note on the Ears
Depending on the softness of the yarn you used, the ears might not look pointy enough. To make them more pointy, you can wet the ears and pinch them with your finger.
Another option would be to block the ears by spraying them with some water and using 2 pins, pull them into shape. Pin them down on a blocking board or foam board until they're dry.
The ears of my Black Cat Worry Worms were not blocked in these photos.
I hope you enjoyed making this cute and easy Cat Worry Worm! What will you be using it for?
I’d love to hear from you!
Happy hooking!
