
Unicorn Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Materials Needed
Yarn in 3 contrasting colors.
Color 1: # 4 Medium weight yarn for Unicorn head & ears
Color 2: # 3 DK weight yarn for flowers + yellow for the horn
Color 3: # 4 Medium weight yarn for granny square
Black thread for the eyes
I used:
- Loops & Threads Impeccable Acrylic
- Loops & Threads Heathered Tweed in Rose Quartz
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK for flowers and horn
Crochet hook: 4.5 mm & 5.5 mm
A tapestry needle
A pair of scissors
Abbreviations Used in Pattern
- MC - Magic Circle (alternative to Magic Cirlce suggested in pattern)
- Ch = Chain
- sc = Single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = Double crochet
- inc = increase = work 2 of these stitches into the same stitch of the previous round.
- dec = decrease = work 2 stitches together
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = Stitch
- sts = Stitches
- fo = Fasten off

Size
Granny Square = 20 cm * 20 cm (8")
Unicorn head (including ears) = 15 cm high x 7.5 cm wide (6 " x 3")
Notes
You can make the pattern larger or smaller by either: changing the yarn weight and/or hook size.
- Numbers at the end of each row (in brackets) indicate the number of final stitches in that row or round.
- Granny Square: Ch 2 at the beginning of a round counts as a stitch.
- Unicorn Head: Ch 1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Please note that I use US crochet terms.

Unicorn Granny Square Crochet Pattern Instructions
Unicorn Head
With White and 5.5 mm hook, tie a slip knot on your hook, ch 7
Row 1: Starting from the second chain from your hook, work 6 sc along the chain, ch 1, turn (6)


Row 2: Inc, 4 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (8)

Row 3 - 4: 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8)

Row 5: Inc, 6 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (10)
Row 6: 10 sc, ch 1, turn (10)
Row 7: Dec, 6 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (8)

Row 8: 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8)
Row 9: Dec, 4 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (6)
Row 10 - 13: 6 sc, ch 1, turn (6)

Row 14: Dec, 2 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (4)
Row 15: Dec x 2 (2)

Now continue to sc loosely along the contour of the whole head. You will be crocheting into the sides of stitches. Work 2 sc into the right and left corners of the top of the head. Sl st to the last st to join.

Leaving about a 10 " tail, cut your yarn and fasten off.

With black embroidery thread and needle, embroider the eyes onto the unicorn’s head between Row 4 and 5 with 2 sts apart.
Nose (optional): With black embroidery thread, add 2 French Knots at the top of the second Row, 2 stitches apart.

Unicorn Ears x 2
With White and 5.5 mm hook, tie a slip knot on your hook, ch 3

Row 1: Sc in the second ch from your hook, sc in the next ch, ch 1, turn (2)

Row 2: Inc x 2, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 3 - 4: 4 sc, ch 1, turn
Row 5: Dec, 2 sc, ch 1, turn (3)
Row 6: Dec, sc, ch 1, turn (2)

Row 7: Dec (1)
Leaving a long enough tail to sew onto your project, cut your yarn and fasten off.
Repeat instructions for second ear.

Unicorn Horn
With yellow and 4.5 mm hook, tie a slip knot on your hook, ch 7.
Row 1: Sc into the second chain from your hook, sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc.
Leaving a long enough tail to sew onto your project, cut your yarn and fasten off.

Unicorn Flowers x 3
Round 1:
Option 1: With color 2, DK yarn and 4.5 mm hook, work 5 sc into a MC (5). Pull your magic circle closed and sl st to the first sc of Round 1.
Option 2: If you're really not keen on the Magic Circle (MC), you can Chain 2, then work 5 single crochets into the second chain from your hook. Sl st to the first sc of Round 1.

Round 2: [3 dc, sl st all in the same stitch].

Repeat [ ] 4 more times (once into every stitch of R 1). (5 Petals)
Slip Stitch to the bottom of the first stitch to join.

Leave a tail for sewing onto your project, cut your yarn and fasten off.
Repeat instructions for 2 more flowers.

You can choose same colors or different colors
Granny Square
With color 3 and 5.5 mm hook, tie a slip knot on your hook, ch 4, sl st to first ch to form a circle ( If you know how to work a Magic Circle, then start with that)

Ch 4 Circle

Magic Circle, Ch 5
Round 1: Ch 5 (this will count as a dc and ch 2), [3 dc into circle, ch 2]. Repeat [ ] 2 more times. 2 dc into the circle, sl st to the 3rd ch from the beginning chain. (3 dc per side of square)

Repeat [ ] 2 more times. 2 dc into the circle, sl st to the 3rd ch from the beginning chain
Pull your Magic Circle closed.
Round 2: Sl st to the next ch 2 space to start this round.
Ch 5, 2 dc into the same space.

Sl st to the next ch 2 space to start this round. Ch 5

2 dc into the same space
Note: Pull your last 2 dc to the right to reveal the next stitch. Sometimes this first stitch is difficult to spot. Do this when you complete each corner stitch.

[dc in the next 3 sts, in corner space work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc]. Repeat [ ] 2 more times. Dc in the next 3 sts, dc in the first space where you worked your ch 5. Sl st to the 3rd chain. (7 dc per side)

Round 3: Sl st to the next space, Ch 5, 2 dc into the same space [dc in the next 7 sts, in corner space work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] Rep [ ] 2 more times. Dc in the next 7 sts, dc in the first space where you worked your ch 5. Sl st to the 3rd chain. (11 dc per side)

Sl st to the next space, Ch 5, 2 dc into the same space

Round 3 complete
Round 4: Sl st to the next space, Ch 5, 2 dc into the same space [dc in the next 11 sts, in corner space work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] Rep [ ] 2 more times. Dc in the next 11 sts, dc in the first space where you worked your ch 5. Sl st to the 3rd chain. (15 dc per side)
Round 5: Sl st to the next space, Ch 5, 2 dc into the same space [dc in the next 15 sts, in corner space work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] Rep [ ] 2 more times. Dc in the next 15 sts, dc in the first space where you worked your ch 5. Sl st to the 3rd chain. (19 dc per side)
Round 6: Sl st to the next space, Ch 5, 2 dc into the same space [dc in the next 19 sts, in corner space work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] Rep [ ] 2 more times. Dc in the next 19 sts, dc in the first space where you worked your ch 5. Sl st to the 3rd chain. (23 dc per side)
Round 7: Sl st to the next space, Ch 5, 2 dc into the same space [dc in the next 23 sts, in corner space work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] Rep [ ] 2 more times. Dc in the next 23 sts, dc in the first space where you worked your ch 5. Sl st to the 3rd chain. (27 dc per side)

Round 7 complete
Leave a tail for weaving in, cut your yarn and fasten off.
Assembly
Place your unicorn head in the center of your granny square. Add the ears, horn and flower in place. I positioned the ears to point to the diagonals of the granny square.

With your long tail left from the unicorn’s head, stitch along the contour of the head to attach the unicorn to the granny square. Use the back loops only from the head and try to use the top loops of the dc sts of the granny square so that your stitches do not show at the back of your granny square.
Attach ears, horn and flowers by stitching them in place.


And there you have it! Your Unicorn Granny Square is complete.
