Cute Unicorn Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

Materials Needed

Worsted weight Yarn in White & Pink. I used:

• Loops & Threads Impeccable Acrylic in White (#4 Medium)
• Loops & Threads Heathered Tweed in Rose Quartz (#3 Light).

DK yarn in yellow for the horn

An arms-length piece of black embroidery thread or DK yarn

Crochet hook: 4.5 mm & 3.5 mm

A tapestry needle

A pair of scissors

Abbreviations Used in Pattern

• MC = Magic Circle
• Ch = Chain
• sc = single crochet
• dc = double crochet
• sl st = slip stitch
• st = stitch
• sts = stitches
• fo = fasten off

Height: 13 cm (5") from the brim to top of the horn.
Width: 18 cm (7")

Gauge

With worsted #4 yarn:15 sts and 9 rows in dc = 10 cm (4") with a 4.5 mm hook.

Notes

This baby hat pattern is beginner-friendly with step-by-step photo tutorials.

You can make the pattern larger or smaller by either: changing the yarn weight and/or hook size, adding or reducing the number of chains. Please refer to the Hat Sizing Chart to adjust sizing.

- Numbers at the end of each row (in brackets) indicate the number of final stitches in that row. 

- Ch 1  and Ch 2 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.

- Please note that I use US crochet terms.

Unicorn Baby Hat Crochet Pattern Instructions

Hat

R1: With white & 4.5 mm hook, start with a Magic Circle, Ch 2, Work 10 dc into a Magic Circle. (10)
Note: If you don't know how to work a Magic Circle, then tie a slip knot on your hook, ch 2, 10 dc into the 2nd chain from your hook. (10)

Pull your magic circle closed. Sl st to the top of your first st to join.

R2: Ch 2, Inc into each st around. Sl st to join. (20)

R3: Ch 2, [inc, dc] x 10. Sl st to join. (30)

R4: Ch 2, [inc, dc into the next 2 sts] x 10. Sl st to join.(40)

R5: Ch 2, [inc, dc into the next 3 sts] x 10. Sl st to join. (50)

Measure your hat at this point according to the hat sizing template. If you want to make it larger, add rounds as appropriate following the pattern for increasing rounds in a dc flat circle (free printable diagram below).

R6-10: Ch 2, dc around, sl st to join. (50)

Leave a 4" tail, cut your yarn and fasten off.

R11: Attach pink yarn one st to the right of your yarn tail, ch 1, hdc around. Work over your tails so you don't have to weave them in later.

Leave a 4" tail, cut your yarn and fasten off. Weave in your ends.

Ears x 2

R1: With white & 4.5 mm hook, tie a slip knot on your hook, ch 2, 4 sc into the 2nd chain from your hook, turn (4)

R2: Inc, 2 sc, inc, turn. (6)

Note: the increases into your last st might be a little tight. Make sure you don't miss them.

R3: Inc, 4 sc, inc, turn. (8)

R4: Inc, 6 sc, inc, turn.(10)

R5: Inc, 8 sc, inc, turn. (12)

R6: Inc, 10 sc, inc, turn. (14)

R7-8: 14 sc, turn. (14)

R9: (Dec, sc) x 4, dec into the last 2 sts. (9)

Fold ear and sl st through both sides to the top of the ear. (4)

Leave a long tail for sewing, cut your yarn and fasten off.

Tuck beginning yarn tail into the ear.

Insert your hook from the bottom opening of the ear, pull end tail from the top of the ear with your crochet hook so it comes out the bottom opening.

Repeat instructions for second ear.

Unicorn Horn

R1: With DK yellow yarn and 3.5 mm hook, 4 sc into a Magic Circle.
(Note: Alternative to magic circle, attach a slip knot on your hook, ch 2, work 4 sc into the second chain from your hook.)

R2: Sc into each st around. (4)

R3: (inc, sc into the next st) x 2. (6)

R4: Sc around. (6)

R5: (inc, sc into next 2 sts) x 2. (8)

R6: Sc around. (8)

R7: (inc, sc into next 3 sts) x 2. (10)

Leave a tail to sew onto hat, cut and fasten off.

Unicorn Flowers x 3

Round 1:
Option 1: With 3.5 mm hook, work 5 sc into a MC (5). Pull your magic circle closed and sl st to the first sc of Round 1.

Option 2: If you're really not keen on the Magic Circle, you can Chain 2, then work 5 single crochets into the second chain from your hook. Sl st to the first sc of Round 1.

Round 2: [3 dc, sl st all in the same stitch]. 

Repeat [ ] 4 more times (once into every stitch of R 1). (5 Petals)

Slip Stitch to the bottom of the first stitch to join.

Leave a 4" tail, cut your yarn and fasten off.

Now gather the components of your Unicorn Hat and stitch them in place. Fold your hat in half and make sure the joins are centered in the back.

Start with the horn on the top center.

Sew on each ear 3 stitches on either side of the horn.

Sew on the flowers centered on the front brow of the hat.

Stitch the Unicorn's eyes with black thread.
