
How to Crochet the Puff Flower Granny Square
Step-by-Step Tutorial
You must be a fan of Granny Squares if you landed on this page. Do you know how to crochet the basic granny square yet? If not, you can learn how to crochet the basic granny square here.
This Puff Flower Granny Square includes an 8-petal puff flower in the center of it. It is great for afghans, throw pillows, tote bags, or even clothing accents. It's beginner-friendly once you get used to the puff stitch, and you can customize it with your favorite color combinations.

You could choose to either work this granny square in one single color or change colors for each round. Fo this tutorial, I will use one solid color.

Materials
Aran / Worsted weight cotton yarn. I used Paintbox Yarns Recycled Cotton Worsted.
3 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle
Abbreviations
mc = magic circle
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
Puff = puff stitch
st = stitch
sts = stitches
fo = fasten off

This granny square measures 8 cm * 8 cm (3" * 3")
Yardage
I used about 7m for this project (7.6 yards)
Gauge
9 sts & 4.5 rows = 5 cm in dc with 3 mm hook

- Ch 2 at the beginning of a round counts as a stitch.
- Please note that I use US crochet terms.

How to Crochet the Puff Flower Granny Square Instructions
Start with a Magic Circle
Note: If you don't know how to crochet a Magic Circle, you can start with ch 2, then work R 1 into the second ch from your hook.
Round 1: Ch 1, 8 hdc in magic circle, tighten to close, join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc. (8 hdc)



Round 2: Ch 1, [puff, ch 3] in each st around. (8 puff sts, 8 ch-3 sps).


Round 3: Work sl st to get to the next sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next sp, ch 1],
[(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next sp, ch 1], repeat [ ] 3 times, join with a sl st to first ch 2 of this round (24 dc, 12 ch-3 sps)

sl st to get to the next sp, ch 2

(dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp

ch 1, 2 dc in next sp, ch 1

(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next sp

Round 3 complete
Round 4: Ch 1, sc into the next st, (sc, ch 2, sc) into the corner sp, [2 sc, sc into the next sp, 2 sc, sc into the next sp, 2 sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) into the corner sp], repeat [ ] 2 more times.
2 sc, sc into the next sp, 2 sc, sc into the next sp, join with a sl st to first ch 1 of this round (40 sc, 8 ch)

Ch 1, sc into the next st, (sc, ch 2, sc) into the corner sp

Round 4 complete
Round 5: Ch 1, sc, [(sc, ch 2, sc) in next corner sp,10 sc], repeat [ ] 3 times, 8 sc, sl st to first ch 2 of this round (46 sc, 8 ch)
Leave an extra long tail for sewing onto your project, cut yarn and fasten off.

Round 4 complete
And that's it! You've created your very own puff flower granny square!
