The Easiest Crochet Headband Pattern You’ll Ever Make

Perfect For Beginners

Want to make a super cute and cozy headband that’s perfect for keeping your hair out of your face?

This twist headband is the perfect project if you're a beginner because all you need to know is how to crochet a chain, half double crochet (hdc) and half double crochet in the back loop only (hdcblo)

This will create that wonderful ribbing effect on your headband. It's the same used to make cuffs for sleeves on sweaters or jackets. It's quite stretchy, so make sure to make your headband a little smaller than the head circumference to allow for negative ease.

I made this headband for my 8 year old daughter, so it's a little small. Use the headband sizing chart below for sizing reference.

This cute twist headband will make a lovely quick gift for your loved ones or if you want to make one for yourself, choose your favorite colors that match your clothes!

You can make the pattern larger or smaller by either: changing the yarn weight and/or hook size, adding or reducing the number of rounds. Below is a FREE headband sizing chart for you.

Head Circumference: Measure around the widest part of the head and subtract the desired amount of negative ease (1–2 inches).

Example Calculation:

  • Head circumference: 22 inches
  • Desired ease: 2 inches negative
  • Headband length: 20 inches

Note: Adjust the number of rows to match the desired length for the headband. The finished length should be about 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) smaller than the head circumference to account for negative ease.

Leave a long 10" tail after your last row to use for sewing the ends together.

Finishing – Creating the Twist

Align the Ends: Lay the headband flat and align the short ends.

Fold each short end in half widthwise so that both ends form a “U” shape.

Position the Ends: Slide the folded ends together:

  • Place one folded end inside the other, ensuring all layers align.
  • You should now have four layers overlapping each other.

Sew the Layers Together: Using a yarn needle and the long yarn tail:

  • Sew through all four layers, stitching securely across the width of the headband.
  • You can use a whipstitch or a running stitch—whatever feels comfortable.

Fasten Off: Leaving a 4" tail, cut your yarn and fasten off. Weave in your end securely.

Flip Right Side Out: Turn the headband right side out so the seam is hidden, and you can see the twist in the center.
