Inspired by the traditional lucky horseshoe, this festive ornament combines a classic symbol of good fortune with a Christmas wreath design.
You can hang it on your Christmas tree, use it as a gift topper, or make a batch to sell at Christmas markets. It's a quick project that uses small amounts of yarn from your stash and adds a cute handmade touch to your holiday decorating.

Materials Needed
- Aran / Worsted weight cotton yarn in Green and Red.
- 5.5 mm & 3.5 mm hooks
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
- Optional Christmas Embellishments (bell, snowflakes, etc.)
- A short string of jute or ribbon if you're planning to hang your ornament.
Abbreviations Used in Pattern
- Ch = Chain
- hdc = half double crochet
- inc = half double crochet increase = 2 hdc into the same stitch
- dec = half double crochet decrease over the next 2 stitches
- st = stitch
- sts = stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- fo = fasten off

Measurements/Size
The finished ornament measures approximately 9 cm (3.5 in) tall by 7 cm (2.8 in) wide.
Yardage
I used about 7 m for this project (7.6 yards)
Gauge
14 sts and 8 rows in hdc = 10 cm (4") with a 5.5 mm hook.
Notes
- You can make the pattern larger or smaller by either: changing the yarn weight and/or hook size.
- Numbers at the end of each row (in brackets) indicate the number of final stitches in that row.
- We will be working in hdc (half double crochet) stitches throughout this pattern.
- We will be working on both sides of the initial chain.
- You can choose to work into the back bumps of your chain for a neater finish, otherwise, working into the tops loops of the chain is perfectly fine too
- Please note that I use US crochet terms.

Bow
With red yarn, tie a slip knot on your 3.5 mm hook. Ch 30.

Holly Berries
Cut an arm's length of red yarn and thread it onto your yarn needle.

Embroider 3 French Knots on either side of your horseshoe (each with 3 wraps around your needle). You may choose to have the two holly berries symmetrical or asymmetrical as I did. Below is a tutorial on how to work the French Knot:
Weave in your ends.
You may choose to embellish the bow with a small bell, snowflake or other Christmas embellishment.

To hang your ornament, you can attach a piece of twine, jute string or ribbon. You could also use this horseshoe to embellish Christmas gifts or Christmas cards.
