Measurements/Size

Beige/Red = 5 rows; Green = 7 rows

simple crochet christmas headband

This is an adult woman's size headband measuring about 40 cm in length (excluding ties). The headband is sized at 10 cm less than the head circumference to account for the bowtie in the back.

This headband can be adjusted to any height and size. Decide how high you would like yours to be. The beige/red one is 5 rows in total. The green one is 7 rows. You can also adjust head circumference size using the headband sizing chart below.

Yardage

I used about 17 m for this project (18.5 yards) for a 5-Row headband.

Gauge

16 stitches and 10 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm (4") in dc with 4 mm hook

Notes

- Use any type of yarn to achieve gauge.

- Try to crochet over your yarn tails so you don’t have to weave them in later.

- Numbers at the end of each row (in brackets) indicate the number of final stitches in that row.

- Ch 1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch. I opted for a ch 1 instead of the usual ch 2 to minimize the turning chain gaps at the end of the rows.

- Please note that I use US crochet terms.

Headband Width A

Work a second dc into the last st (to turn the corner), then dc into the next 2 sts.

Note: You'll be working into the sides of the sts now, so they will not be very defined. Work to the middle of the side (you might need one or two more dc sts if you added more rows to the length of the headband.)

Ch 50, sl st across the length of the chain.

Dc into the next 2 sts, add another dc into the corner st.

Note: If you added more rows in Color A, you'll need to work one or two more dc to reach the corner st.

Embellishment (Optional)

Add a festive embellishment of your choice to this headband. I added a small wreath. You could add a tiny Santa Hat, Star or Christmas Tree, for instance. Here's a small flower pattern that would also look lovely.

Leave a 4” tail, cut yarn and fasten off.

Option 1: Embellish with red yarn & needle

Cut an arm’s length of red yarn, thread through your darning needle. Leave a long tail at the beginning and stitch in and out of each stitch around your wreath. Tie a bow at the top of the wreath.

Option 2: Embellish with red yarn & hook

Alternatively, you could work sl st surface crochet stitches on top of R 1. In that case, do not cut your red yarn before starting your surface crochet stitches. Just make sure to leave a long beginning tail so it's easy to tie a bow in the end. Here’s a video tutorial on how to work sl st surface crochet.

Cut excess yarn and tie a bow at the top of your wreath.
