Frequently Asked Questions About Crochet Scrunchies

Before you start with your first crochet scrunchie, you might have some questions, which is totally normal.

Have a quick look at these FAQs to get more clarity and if you have any other questions that I haven't answered here, please feel free to send me a note in the comments below.

Let's start with the most common question:

What yarn is best for crochet scrunchies?

The best thing about crochet hair scrunchies is you can literally use any type of yarn you have lying around. You can use cotton, acrylic, velvet, you name it! The chunkier the yarn, so softer your crochet scrunchie will be.

How do you crochet a ponytail holder?

There are many ways you can crochet a ponytail holder (also called scrunchies). All you need is an elastic band (preferably without a metal part), some leftover yarn, a crochet hook and a yarn needle.

Here are some common crochet scrunchie methods:

  1. Crochet straight into the elastic band and using hyperbolic crochet create a wavy texture around the band,
  2. Crochet a rectangle in any stitch and then wrap it around the elastic band to form a tube.
  3. Crochet in sc stitches & chains in between straight onto the elastic band.
  4. Crochet a lacy stitch straight into the hair band for a fine & feminine look.

How do you crochet velvet hair scrunchies?

Velvet yarn is great for hair scrunchies because it has a really soft texture and its bulky weight give your scrunchie a fluffy look.

You can use most methods to crochet the scrunchie (as described above). You probably wouldn't achieve a lacy look with velvet yarn, but the hyperbolic crochet method and the tube methods work perfectly well.

How do you attach yarn to hair ties?

You can attach yarn to hair ties by:

  1. Simply tying a knot around your hair tie with your yarn. Insert your yarn through your hair tie and tie 2 knots to secure it.
  2. Make a slip knot on your crochet hook. Remove the slip knot. Insert your hook through the elastic hair tie, pick up your slip knot, and make 1 sc to attach your yarn to your hair tie (essentially, your elastic hair band will act as the center of a Magic Circle and you'll be working your stitches into the hair tie)
