Easy Flap Clutch Handbag Crochet Pattern
For Beginners
I've always wanted to crochet myself a little clutch handbag and I finally got around to it! This is such an easy pattern and you can make several of these to match your outfits. They'd also make great handmade gifts for friends, family or work colleagues. You can add your own embellishments, handmade buttons or simply crochet a button as I'll show you below.

Materials Needed
- Macrame cotton chord in desired color. I used Recycled Denim Jeans for this project (Bobbing). Here are some substitute options you can use: T-shirt Yarn (Jersey Yarn), Cotton Rope / Braided Cotton Yarn (3-5 mm thick), Bulky Cotton Yarn (thicker cotton yarn (like Lily Sugar’n Cream BIG or similar), Crochet Cotton (Multiple Strands Held Together or you can use this method to make thin yarn thicker), Jute or Hemp Twine which will give a natural, rustic texture.
- 7 mm crochet hook
- Large yarn needle
- Button in contrasting color - either ready-made, DIY or simply crochet a small circle (pattern below).
- Chain hanger (optional)

I stopped here, but if you'd like a longer flap, you can keep going for another few rows, reducing each row by 2 sts.

4 Rows for the flap, decreasing each row

2 sc into the side of each row

Continue to sc along the top of the bag (21)

8 sc along the other side of the flap (8)

2 sc into the side of each row upwards towards the top of the flap
7 sc along the top of the flap, ch 5, sk a st, 7 sc (15)

Embellishment
You can sew on any button of choice. A nice idea would be to make some DIY Buttons out of avocado pits.
You could also crochet a circle in a contrasting color to use as a button. For this, work 6 sc into a magic circle. Leave a long tail, cut your yarn and pull the yarn through the last stitch. Work an invisible fasten off for a clean finish. Sew the button into place on the body of the bag.

Crocheted button

Metal button
Hanger (optional)
Attach contrasting color to one side of your bag, ch 60. Attach to the other side of the bag with a sl st. Sl st into the next st, sc along the ch, sl st to the next st to join to the other side of the bag.
Leave a tail, cut yarn and fasten off.
Weave in all your ends.
You could also add a metal chain hanger for a more stylish look.
