This TikTok by Shelby Crochet is more of a tutorial showing how to make this super easy Granny Square Top.

Shelby combines 5 colors of super saver yarn to crochet 5 Granny Squares. She estimates about 150 yards for the cream and >100 yards for the other colors.

She then joins them using single crochet (sc), then she creates a border (1 row of sc around the strip), then she does *2hdc, ch2, sk2 st* on end pieces. For the back closure, she makes a chain of about 20".

For the cups, she didn't give much detail, just mentioning to crochet cups that fit, then meet cups on middle square and sew to band. Weave chain on holes on end squares.

Add straps (ch 66, sl st all way down). All done!

Frequently Asked Questions About Crochet Granny Square Tops

How do you crochet a granny square for beginners?

Granny Squares are delightful crochet motifs that are ideal for beginners.

They are composed of groups of 3 double crochet (dc) clusters worked in the round from the center outwards.

For a tutorial on how to crochet Granny Squares, you can check out my tutorial for Granny Squares Crochet Pattern.

How long does it take to crochet granny squares?

That depends on whether you're changing colors or not. For me, a single-colored Granny Square takes about 7 minutes for 4 rounds. If I change colors each round, I'd say about 10 minutes per square of 4 rounds.

Remember that you still have to weave in your ends!

How do you crochet a granny square top?

A Granny Square Top is generally composed of a few Granny Squares stitched together to fit your body.

Some Granny Square tops are made entirely using only Granny Squares, but others have a rim of Granny Squares at the bottom, and the top section is simply a plain colour. For the top section you could make cups, Bralette, a v-neck, halter top, triangle top, high Neck or a simple straight front.

Sometimes, the straps are made using smaller sized Granny Squares or you could also crochet a chain and reinforce with a row of single crochet (sc) stitches all along.

Above are examples of some Granny Square tops you can use for inspiration.

How many granny squares do I need for a top?

That depends:

  • On whether you want to make the top using Granny Squares only,
  • or just for a border.
  • You also need to consider the size of each Granny Square (number of rounds),
  • What type of yarn you use & your hook size.

If you want to make a whole top using Granny Squares exclusively, you might need from about 12 to 22 Granny Squares for the body section, and 6 to 8 smaller Granny Squares for the straps.

If you want to make only the bottom border of your Granny Square top, then you'll need to measure your waist (or wherever you want your Granny Square top to reach), measure one side of your Granny Square, then calculate the length you need to go around your body.

Types of yarn to use for Crochet Granny Square Tops

What is the best yarn for Granny Square Tops?

1. You can crochet your summer Granny Square tops using cotton or a cotton blend yarn (like a cotton/bamboo blend).

It is slightly more difficult to crochet with cotton yarn than wool, for instance, as a beginner because it's a little less stretchy, and therefore less forgiving of mistakes.

The good thing about using cotton yarn for your crochet Granny Tops is that it'll hold its shape, is machine washable (in most cases), and is wonderful to wear during the summer months.

2. You could also use acrylic yarn, of course. I'd recommend it if you're new to crochet.

Acrylic yarns are widely available and come in such a variety of breath-taking colors, that you might just find it irresistible!

Acrylic yarns are also cheaper, machine washable (and dryable in most cases) and can be used for lots of other crochet projects too. Want to give these trendy bucket hats a try this summer?

Are acrylics itchy?

Some acrylic yarn can be quite soft, but others that have a high percentage of acrylic can be quite itchy and irritate your skin.

Skin irritation can be because it doesn't breathe as well as natural fibers and can make you sweat.

It could also be the dye used in the acrylic yarn that can cause your skin to get a rash.

If you have sensitive skin, you're probably better off using a cotton blend yarn. It's also great for summer clothing items as it will keep you cool, absorb sweat and you can easily wash it in your washing machine.

How much yarn do I need to crochet Granny Square top?

That depends of course on the style of Granny Square Top you'll be making. Some can be made to measure, where you can use any weight of yarn you want, but generally speaking:

1. For a Granny Square Wrap top with sleeves you'll need approximately 250-500 yards of weight 4 (worsted weight) yarn using a 5mm hook.

2. For a bralette-style Granny Square Top, you would need about 100-200g DK cotton/bamboo yarn with its recommended hook size.

3. For a crochet Granny Square top composed entirely of Granny Squares, you'd need 200-350 grams of cotton/bamboo yarn.

How much yarn did I use in my crochet project?

There's a really easy way to calculate how much yarn you used in your crochet project. This works best for single-color projects, but if you use it for multi-colored projects like granny squares, you'll just need to weigh your work after you're done with each color separately.

Feel free to use my FREE online Yardage Calculator to find out how much yarn you used.
